Karen Lia Schlick, BFA, MA Art Ed

Karen graduated from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design with Master's in Art Education. Her published thesis topic was "Art and Healing: A Perspective for Art Education". She has 30 years of experience teaching art education at the junior high level, as well as being a visual arts support teacher for the Nova Scotia visual arts curriculum in Dartmouth elementary schools. She has also taught art education courses at the University level, at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.

She was one of the curriculum writers for the new Nova Scotia visual arts curriculum, grade 7 to 9. She has led numerous workshops in professional development and art for teachers, Province wide. Retreat centers and private therapists have worked together with her, developing workshops on personal creativity and exploration in art. 

She was awarded the Canadian Fitzhenry and Whiteside award for excellence and innovation in art education, in 1996.  She was also named Nova Scotia Art Educator of the year by Visual Arts Nova Scotia.

She is a frequent conference presenter at the Nova Scotia Art Teachers Association conferences and has also presented at the national art education conference in the United States (NAEA).

Karen has experience working with a wide variety of media.  Both two and three dimensional work has been exhibited in several galleries in Nova Scotia, including Mount Saint Vincent Art Gallery, Mary Black Gallery, and a solo installation show at Eye Level Gallery.  Her work has traveled across Canada as part of the show "Women's Bookworks". Her work is also located in the Nova Scotia Art Bank collection.
